Meet the Community: Carly!

Every month, we'll feature one of our students in an interview about their experience with Naked in Motion. Get to know our awesome Naked! community, read about their journeys, and join the movement.

I’d say if they’re women or trans that coming to the Women’s & Trans only class first is a very nice way to ease into it because it’s smaller and a little more comfortable and intimate, but for everybody else, I would just say dive into it. Try it once, it’s worth it! Once you get over the initial first thirty seconds of taking your clothes off, you’ll kind of forget about the rest of it.

Willow: How did you find out about Naked in Motion?

Carly: I found out about it through a book club that I’m a part of, actually, who came and did a private event with you which I couldn’t go to, but I decided to go to your class, just a regular class. So I guess word of mouth, but a little more complicated word of mouth.

W: How long have you been a Naked in Motion student?

C: Oh, I don’t know, maybe a few months now, I guess?

W: Yeah, I’d say so. How often would you say you attend class?

C: Well this week I came twice, but usually closer to once a month I think, just whenever the schedule allows.

W: So your first time taking a Naked in Motion class if you can remember: What was that like for you? Do you have any lingering feelings or memories of that class, of the way you felt?

C: It was very comfortable. Honestly, the thing that I remember the most was that I was surprised how much Pilates was in it which I liked more than I noticed anything related to specific nudity. It was more about, “oh this is a different style of yoga.” It was very comfortable. I mean, I’ve been to naked events before, so it wasn’t my first time there, but it was a very comfortable space, it was more about the yoga. It wasn’t really about much else beyond that.

W: Is there anything else that made it feel comfortable? Would you say it made you feel safe, too?

C: Yes, very safe vibe. Certainly the outline and the rules is helpful, but I also just think the community and the type of people who have been attracted to this group, people who I’ve met and talked to at the various classes are all pretty much on the same wavelength: it’s a nice opportunity to practice yoga and being unclothed is just sort of an extra, freeing aspect of it.

W: What would you say to new students who are nervous about attending class or coming to do naked yoga?

C: I’d say if they’re women or trans that coming to the Women’s & Trans only class first is a very nice way to ease into it because it’s smaller and a little more comfortable and intimate, but for everybody else, I would just say dive into it. Try it once, it’s worth it! Once you get over the initial first thirty seconds of taking your clothes off, you’ll kind of forget about the rest of it.

W: I feel that way too. You said you were pretty comfortable from the beginning. Thinking back to your first time ever going to any naked events, did you ever have any fear or anxiety around being naked in front of others like that?

C: I think the main fear is a pretty common one as a woman, like just the annoyance of men being inappropriate around it honestly more than anything else, less about me being uncomfortable in my own skin because I’m a pretty comfortable person. It’s more about the nerves of how other people are going to look and cruising and that sort of thing, which has never been an issue here. I’ve certainly experienced it at some other events, but never here, and it’s more the exception than the rule in general.

W: Awesome, that’s good. What’s your favorite yoga pose?

C: Oh, I really like child’s pose and I like pigeon. I like ones that are kind of relaxed stretching. I also like the balances though, those are fun.

W: You do? I feel like everyone dreads the balances.

C: No, I think they’re a fun challenge.

W: What’s your favorite part of class? Do you have a particular favorite part?

C: Not really, I don’t think so. If anything, the end of class because you’ve gone through everything and then it is sort of like the reward at the end. You always feel good at the end of yoga class.

W: One more question. What is a misconception about exercising naked? What do you think a lot of people think about exercising naked that may be a myth or may not be as bad as it might seem?

C: Maybe that it would be more uncomfortable to be naked. I think especially women with breasts who feel like without a bra it would be really uncomfortable or that there would be movement in weird ways, and I think it’s way more comfortable with nothing on. Everything just kind of moves the way it’s supposed to.

W: Thank you so much. I’m so excited about this!
