Every month, we'll feature one of our students in an interview about their experience with Naked in Motion. Get to know our awesome Naked! community, read about their journeys, and join the movement.
Willow: How did you find Naked in Motion?
Scott: Meetup, I think. You came to another naked yoga class and talked about it.
W: How long have you been a Naked in Motion student? [awkwardly interrupts] I can answer this question for you. You've been a Naked in Motion student from the very first class, which was January 27, 2016. You've been to almost every single class, you've maybe missed three classes ever. But you can answer the question, go ahead.
S: From the beginning.
W: Yes, it’s so exciting. "Meet the Community?" He is the community! You're our longest standing student, our most loyal follower. Okay. Why are you such a loyal follower? Why do you come every time?
S: I enjoy it. It’s a lot of fun.
W: What do you enjoy about it?
S: It’s a safe place where you can come and be yourself. You can leave the B.S. of the outside world out there, you can just come and be yourself and not be judged. You can be free. It doesn’t matter how much you make, how you dress, what car you drive. Be yourself.
W: I agree. What was your first experience at a Naked in Motion class like? Do you remember that first day?
S: I was nervous because I’ve never done Pilates. I had done naked yoga, but never Pilates.
W: Would you consider yourself a nudist?
S: Oh yeah, definitely.
W: How long have you been a nudist?
S: Since about 2013.
W: What drew you to nudism?
S: I always liked being naked, but then I think it was an article I saw in the paper and I thought it was interesting. Nudism helped me overcome my shyness, be more accepting of who I am. I had an accident when I was a kid, and I had to learn how to speak again, talk again, and I had to go to speech class. I was hit in the face with a ball, and my teeth got all screwed up. And everyone used to make fun of me. Even my own family. I didn’t want to talk and became very shy. [Nudism] helped me overcome shyness and accept myself for who I am.
W: What would you say to new students who are nervous to try a naked yoga class for the first time?
S: Give it a try, because anything you enjoy, you’re always nervous the first time. If you drive a car, the first time you were nervous. If you ride a bike, the first time you were nervous. Skiing, a new job, anything you enjoy, you’ll always be nervous the first time, regardless of what you do. You might as well try. You don’t want to look back and say, “Oh, I should’ve done it.”
W: That's such a good point. What’s your favorite yoga pose?
S: I don’t know, the warrior I guess. I can do that one easily.
W: What do you think is a misconception that people have moving naked?
S: That it’s always sexual, that there has to be sex involved. They don’t understand that you do everything in a normal yoga class, that you’re just naked as well. It’s no big deal. You hang out with friends, go to the beach and it’s the same thing, you know. You just do it naked.
W: Thanks so much for sharing your story, Scott!
